‘Our land is girt by sea...’ Evocative and immersive, Debbie Mackinnon’s paintings investigate and celebrate the Australian coastline, that elusive and fragile boundary between land and sea. The ocean is always in motion, the land changing as the tide rises and falls. Nothing is static. Her works begin with walks along cliff tops: she makes drawings and studies en plein air, then collage works to abstract the landscape further.
Her horizons are ambiguous, as are her depictions of the coast. These paintings suggest a fragmented, shifting perspective where high and low tide can exist together in the same work. Climate change is set to change our coastline forever; Debbie’s paintings pay homage to the beauty of our coastline and her hopes that it will not be forever eroded by human intervention.
